Forums at a Glance

ShopTalk: This is the general discussion forum for all MSA members. Ask questions and interact with your fellow members! All MSA members automatically are enrolled in ShopTalk.

Chapter Groups: Each MSA member belongs to a regional chapter. We’ll auto-enroll you into your specific chapter, but feel free to explore other chapters as well. This is the place to discuss topics specific to your chapter, such as meetings and local events.

Committee Groups: These forums are specifically for the current members of each committee. MSA will enroll current members of committees to their appropriate group(s).

General Posting Tips

Search existing threads first.
Your fellow museum store buyers and vendors experience similar challenges and situations, so there may already be an answer to the question you need help with. Use the forum’s search feature to see if you can find an immediate, existing answer.

Post descriptive topics/subject lines.
Let your fellow colleagues know what you need help with from the outset. Provide a short summary of your issue in the subject line, like “I need a vendor for ties” or “How do you handle school groups in the store?”

Forum Rules

In order to ensure ShopTalk provides the best benefit for all members, there are a few rules and guidelines we ask you to follow.

  1. Spam and advertising in the forums are prohibited.
    In the forums, spam is any unsolicited advertisement for products, goods and services, or posts with little (or completely unrelated) content. Please do not spam the forums with links to your site or product. Spam also includes sending private messages to a large number of different users.
  1. Do not post material protected by intellectual property laws or copyright-infringing material.
    You may not upload or download files that contain software or other material protected by intellectual property laws, rights of privacy or publicity, or any other applicable law or regulation unless you own or control the rights thereto or have received all necessary consents. Providing or asking for information on how to illegally obtain copyrighted materials is forbidden.
  1. Offensive posts, links or images are not allowed.
    You may not publish, distribute or disseminate defamatory, infringing, obscene or unlawful material or information on or through this site. Any material that constitutes defamation, harassment or abuse is strictly prohibited. Material that is sexually or otherwise obscene, racist, or overly discriminatory is not permitted on these forums. This includes user pictures.
  1. Refrain from sharing harmful applications/programs.
    You may not upload files that contain a virus or any other program designed to interfere with the operation of the site or computers linked to the site.
  1. Avoid cross-posting questions.
    Please refrain from posting the same question in several forums. There is normally one forum that is most suitable for your question.
  1. Do not private message users to ask for help.
    If want to ask fellow members for help, make a new thread in the appropriate forum. This allows the whole community to assist with and benefit from your issue.
  1. Remain respectful of other members at all times.
    You have every right to disagree with your fellow community members and explain your perspective. However, you are not free to attack, degrade, insult or otherwise belittle them or the quality of this community. All posts should be professional and courteous.

Opinions and Liabilities

Any messages, advice, opinions or other information posted to the forums by third parties should not be viewed as endorsed or otherwise approved by MSA. Use of such information is at your own risk. MSA reserves the right to immediately remove any materials from the site that violate these rules, Terms of Use or applicable laws or regulations, or that may subject MSA or its agents or suppliers to liability.

Frequently Asked Questions

Am I allowed more than one account?
You’ll only need one account. If you are banned from the forums, please do not create a new account. If you continue to create new accounts after you have been banned, your IP address will be blocked from the forums.

What happens if I break a rule?
The first time you don’t follow a forum rule, you will receive a warning. If you continue to ignore the rules, you will be banned. A ban of your user account either may be temporary or permanent. The administrators and moderators also have the right to edit, delete, move or close any thread or post, without prior warning, as they deem necessary.

What happens if I see a thread/post that has broken a rule?
Please report the thread/post to the moderator/admin.

Can I post an introduction?
MSA will begin handling this process, introducing all new members once a month in a ShopTalk post.

Can I post a catalog or link to a new product?
The forums are not the appropriate place for advertising. Please reach out to talk about appropriate advertising outlets for this purpose.

Where can I find out who is in charge?
